Central Presbyterian Church,
Houston

A fine example of mid-century church architecture in Houston, Texas featuring a tall jewel-box sanctuary set into a low peripheral volume. A variation on the peristyle atrium, the lower portion of the church extends into a thin shell concrete colonnade enclosing a cloister to complete the campus. The sanctuary volume also features the common modernist motif of walls sliding past the ceiling plane with light-filled reveals, giving the illusion of a floating roof against the full dalle de verre north wall.

Unfortunately, as of August 2010, the congregation has moved out of the building, which is now for sale and slated to be torn down.

The photos below all come from a collection of photos by narrowlarry on flickr. See the complete set here.
